This is very interesting and difficult at the same time.
I agree and wonder if I need to explore this composition technique a bit more. As I was looking at the raindrops on my veranda, I thought of how the shadows and repeating circles of water would be an interesting exploration of full frame composition.
I tried the exercise but am not happy with the results.

Yes. But … this particular challenge was limited to one colour. All those examples at that link had multiple colours.
Same here. I think that a monochromatic surface with lots of texture may work but I was challenged to find such a surface.
